Performance by ALIREZA OSTOVAR
The new music and sound performance by Ali Ostovar explores working with objects associated with his memories from the past. Especially in relation to his childhood memories with his father in his native Iran. The title of the performance refers to a song of the same name by Delkash, one of the most famous singers of the 1940s–1960s in Iran. Ali listened to many Iranian songs at home during his childhood, as his father was fascinated with both listening to and playing traditional music. The title also refers to his life story of carrying a broken Iranian setar around Europe for more than 12 years to find someone who could fix it; he still kept it even after buying a new one.
At the performance, he will play an approximately 30-minute set of live electronic music using his laptop, a cassette player, a synthesizer, and possibly other instruments, questioning what it means to bring the past into the present or keep it there. Does the past consist only of what we remember? And what about what we don’t remember?
He recreates personal memories by selecting different sound materials, using sonic metaphors and transculturation, and playing with time, frequencies, and transformation.
ALIREZA OSTOVAR is an interdisciplinary artist, composer, live electronic performer, researcher, music teacher, and performance artist based in Berlin.
He was born in Tehran. He completed his bachelor’s degree in electronic music at S. Cecilia Conservatory in Rome and his master’s degree in integrative composition at Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen, Germany.
He wrote his master’s thesis on “TRANSCULTURAL MUSIC: A Research of Intercultural and Transcultural Processes in Electroacoustic Music” shortly after officially releasing his first album, “REFLECTIONS” for quartet and live electronics.
Alireza has worked on many projects as a freelance composer, sound designer, and performance artist, including: Marina Abramovic’s “The Cleaner”, International Electroacoustic Festival of Monaco, Emufest (Rome), Ars Electronica, Maxxi Museum of Contemporary Art (Rome), Linux Audio Conference (ZKM, Karlsruhe), Urban Solar Audio Plant (USAP Berlin), Korean Electroacoustic Music Society Annual Conference (KEAMSAC, Seoul), Irish Sound, Science, and Technology Convocation (ISSTC2015), Tanzhaus NRW Düsseldorf, Lichtmuseum (Unna), Ernest Busch Hochschule Berlin, Philharmonie Essen, Centre Pompidou (Paris), Komische Oper Berlin, and others.

Die neue Musik- und Klangperformance von Ali Ostovar untersucht die Arbeit mit Objekten, die mit seinen Erinnerungen aus der Vergangenheit verbunden sind. Vor allem in Bezug auf seine Kindheitserinnerungen mit seinem Vater in seinem Heimatland Iran.
Der Titel der Performance bezieht sich auf ein gleichnamiges Lied von Delkash, einem der bekanntesten Sänger der 1940-1960er Jahre im Iran. Ali hörte in seiner Kindheit zu Hause viele iranische Lieder, da sein Vater sowohl vom Hören als auch vom Spielen traditioneller Musik fasziniert war. Der Titel bezieht sich auch auf seine Lebensgeschichte, als er eine zerbrochene iranische Setar mehr als 12 Jahre lang durch Europa trug, um jemanden zu finden, der sie reparieren konnte; er behielt sie immer noch, auch nachdem er eine neue gekauft hatte.
Bei der Performance wird er ein ca. 30-minütiges Set elektronischer Live-Musik mit seinem Laptop, einem Kassettenspieler, einem Synthesizer und möglicherweise anderen Instrumenten spielen und dabei die Frage stellen, was es bedeutet, die Vergangenheit in die Gegenwart zu holen oder dort zu bewahren. Besteht die Vergangenheit nur aus dem, woran wir uns erinnern? Und was ist mit dem, woran wir uns nicht erinnern?
Er stellt persönliche Erinnerungen wieder her, indem er unterschiedliches Klangmaterial auswählt, klangliche Metaphern und Transkulturalität verwendet und mit Zeit, Frequenzen und Transformation spielt.
ALIREZA OSTOVAR ist ein interdisziplinärer Künstler, Komponist, Live-Elektronik-Performer, Forscher, Musiklehrer und Performance-Künstler in Berlin.
Er wurde in Teheran geboren. Er schloss seinen Bachelor in elektronischer Musik am S. Cecilia Konservatorium in Rom und seinen Master in integrativer Komposition an der Folkwang Universität der Künste in Essen, Deutschland, ab.
Seine Masterarbeit schrieb er zum Thema “TRANSCULTURAL MUSIC: A Research of Intercultural and Transcultural Processes in Electroacoustic Music”, kurz nachdem er sein erstes Album “REFLECTIONS” für Quartett und Live-Elektronik offiziell veröffentlicht hatte.
